Everything You Ever Wanted To Know
Bennett McElwee
Updated 19 September 1994 (version 2.9.2)
This discography is the single largest repository of knowledge about Depeche Mode studio bootleg CDs in existence. It is divided into two sections. The first contains factual information about the CDs, including which tracks are duplicated on the various CDs, and which are available on official releases. The second section contains compiled opinions, comments, rumours and other gossip on each CD.
I haven't listed every CD, because many more recent CDs are compilations of new remixes. Since these all have unique tracks, there's not much point cross-referencing them in this list. For the full story, see the Depeche Mode Unofficial Releases Discography.
Note that since these CDs are bootlegs, obtaining them may involve some legal and moral difficulties.
Thanks to everyone who contributed. See the second section to find out who they are.

=== Information wanted: ======================================================= - Track lists for The Ninth Strike; Ultra Rare Trax 5 and 6; DM Reworked Vol.2; Boing; [title unknown] - Track times for The Eighth Strike - Reviews of the Sixth, Eighth and Ninth Strikes and Ultra Rare Trax 5 and 6 - Any comments or opinions on sound and mix quality are always welcome. - Any information about new remix CDs is extra-welcome. =============================================================================== The Facts =============================================================================== I have tried to make this section as accurate as possible, but I take no responsibility for any factual errors. So there. Letters and numbers refer to other remix CDs; other symbols have their own meanings: = the track has been officially released and is still in print. - the track has been officially released but is now out of print. (see "Sources for Officially-Released Tracks" below to find out where). ? I don't know the track's true identity. If you do, please tell me! Notes in [brackets] are my additions. Being bootlegs, a LOT of tracks are mislabeled on the CD or packaging; in this discography, I list all tracks by their usual name (whatever that is). Where the listed name is significantly different, it is "quoted" inside the brackets. Notes ----- Prehistoric and Class-X mixes are by Razormaid. I have sorted out the facts (E&OE) and put them in the "Facts" section above. Bennett. =============================================================================== Ultra Rare Trax 1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Chad Maier Overall, this disc has the worst quality out of all of the bootlegs. The other URT CD's quality is better; overall, URT is good because of the incredible rarity of a lot of the songs. QUALITY = 5 (of 10) Halo (Uncomfortable Mix) 4:29 Remixed by Daniel Miller. Very bad quality. Enjoy the Silence (Razormaid) 5:49 Excellent mix, very bad quality. Behind the Wheel Take Two (Video Mix) 3:52 Different from US video New Dress (Razormaid Mix) 6:33 Bad quality ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: "Andre Agassi" I just picked up a bootleg called "Ultra Rare Trax". The mix of songs is excellent. The only unfortunate thing about it is the recording is mediocre at best. Lots of tape hiss. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Sang-Yoon Oh Sound quality is worse than DJ's Revenge. Really nice remixes, though. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: D. Wellman I strongly recommend Ultra Rare Trax Vol I. Tracks 1,5,6,8 and 9 are especially good remixes w/ decent to good sound quality. =============================================================================== Ultra Rare Trax 2 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Chad Maier Although better quality than URT 2, some tracks were still really badly recorded. QUALITY = 7 (out of 10) Just Can't Get Enough (On-USound) 7:19 Quality is not that great. Sea of Sin (Razormaid Remix) 6:27 Awesome remix!! Enjoy the Silence (Hollywood Mix) 9:01 Pretty cool. Incorporates just about every sound from US CD single as well as XLCD imports. Nothing (Dallas Beat Mix) 8:50 Pretty cool remix. Behind the Wheel (Razormaid) 5:51 Just about the shittiest quality of any song on all of the bootlegs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: D. Wellman I bought URT Vol II and returned it (it was horrid! Bad sound quality, bad remixes). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Michael Thomas I picked up Ultra Rare Trax vol. 2 today. The sound quality is MUCH better than that on vol. 1. Track 12 has a lot of tape hiss, and track 5 sounds like it was taken from a bad record. =============================================================================== Ultra Rare Trax 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Chad Maier Overall, pretty good quality. Cool Martin Gore Traxs intended for Counterfeit (However, Andrea Meth doesn't like them...) QUALITY = 8 (out of 10) Strangelove (Fresh Ground Mix) 7:54 Remix by Daniel Miller available only on UK 12" Promo. Pretty cool mix. Happiest Girl (Razormaid Mix) 6:55 Awesome remix!! I Love, You Love, Me Love (Birthday Mix) 5:31 Great remix of an old Gary Glitter track. This track has this song (2:38) and is immediately followed by Down in the Boom Docks (2:47) New Mode Mega '90 16:03 One of the most incredible megamixes I've heard! Mostly from Violator/MFTM albums. Halo (Hellfire Mix) 6:28 Bad quality remix by the Bogus Brothers World In My Eyes (Mayhem Mode) 4:49 Different mix from that of LCD Bong 20. Remix by Jon Marsh of Beloved Waiting For The Night (LA Lunar Mix) 9:08 Very interesting mix indeed by the KROQ station in LA, but never broadcasted. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Bennett McElwee Strangelove (Fresh Ground Mix) A good remix with a different puchy beat. And of course that "Super DJ" sample from Cameo's "Word Up". Happiest Girl (Razormaid Mix) Big booming beat, and some occasional nice drum samples. Good mix, but not very good sound quality, once again sounding as if it was recorded at too high a volume--the drums sound a bit sick, as if they're played over an out-of-tune FM station. I Love, You Love, Me Love (Birthday Mix) Brilliant! Not great quality sound, but that just adds to the charm! Sounds very much like a home demo, with very cheap and nasty drum and keyboard sounds, and beautifully OTT vocals. Cuts off suddenly, and Down in the Boom Docks starts up. Down in the Boom Docks (Spector Mix) Sounds like a demo, but with better sound quality than the previous track. It's a guitar-based rock number, and sounds to me a lot like something Elvis might have done in one of his rawer moments... New Mode Mecca '90 Megamix This is basically a megamix of "Violator" with a few other bits thrown in. The songs are combined in interesting ways, not just strung together one after another as in some megamixes. Has a really nice finish! Contains the following stuff: Dangerous / Waiting For The Night / New Dress / World In My Eyes (remix) / Enjoy The Silence (remix) / (Dave saying "Thank you" etc.) / New Life / Halo / Just Can't Get Enough / Personal Jesus / Clean / Sweetest Perfection / (random bits & pieces) / Policy Of Truth There are occasional vinyl pops and a couple of scratches, but overall quality is good. At 15:21 into the track, the stereo image shifts. Just another little mastering "oops". Halo (Hellfire Mix) Not great sound quality, with a bit of static on the hihat and Dave's S's. Sound quality is MUCH better than on The Second Strike. This version is actually listenable. A very good re-edit (as opposed to remix). World In My Eyes (Mayhem Mode Mix) Very minimal dubby house mix, giving the elements of the song a lot of space. The piano chords sound great with just a beat under them. Overall, deep and mellow and very nice. Something To Do (Metal Mix) Slightly experimental mix, with a complex rhythm built up of lots of clangy metal-on-metal samples. The vocals are cut and pasted and generally distorted a bit. I think this mix is fascinating, but many people hate it so I guess it's not for everyone. Strangelove (Bomb the Bass Mix) Opens with a big booming beat and develops into a fairly standard mix. Has a very cool zapgun sound used occasionally. Waiting For The Night (L.A. Lunar Mix) Opens with a strange quote, then a burst of strange sounds as the song starts. Synth washes and sound effects are laid over the song all the way through. A scrappy drumbeat is laid over the middle part of the mix--the drums sound good but are a bit too dominant. Turns into dub halfway through, just a bassline and the drums with some odd samples (babies, telephones etc.), and a few bits of the original song come through at the end to finish it off. Overall this is a GREAT mix, sounding like something the Orb would come up with (although the production is a little rough in places). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Bill Tiede When the band swung through Texas, they gave a radio interview to a station in Austin, a good friend of mine was able to get through and ask a question to Martin. The question was whether he had recorded I Love You Love Me Love and Down The The Boomdocks for the Counterfeit EP. He replied no, then said, wait! He then stated that he had recorded those two songs earlier in his career mostly as a joke and given them to a friend as a present. He had no idea why anyone would ask about it, but assumed that since we knew, some bootlegger must have gotten a copy of it. So there y'all have it; they are the real McCoy, but not recorded for Counterfeit. =============================================================================== Ultra Rare Trax 4 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Chad Maier These remixes are mostly early recordings of current mixes, and thus the quality isn't the best. QUALITY = 6 Are People People? Bizarre remix by Adrian Sherwood. Sea of Sin (Razor Cuts Mix) 6:54 Great remix with Behind the Wheel in it! Just Can't Get Enough (Rubber Band Mix) 6:23 Incredible remix, very danceable and house-sounding, with Flexible mixed in. Best mix yet! To Have and to Hold - Icelandic Taster Remix 3:25 Awesome mix with different keyboard sounds! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Bennett McElwee Overall sound quality is quite good, but some tracks have audible hiss and some sound a little bit muffled. A Question Of Time (Old Town Mix) Sounds pretty much the same as the New Town mix, without the live bits tacked on. Personal Jesus (I'm Not Crazy Anymore Mix) Housier than the original, with samples saying, "the Lord Jesus Christ himself" and "I'm not crazy any more!". Enjoy the Silence (Hot Trax Mix) A mix of most of the official mixes. During one section it breaks down to just a rhythm with the Harmonium version laid over the top. There's a lot of wow and flutter in some parts, as if the track were mastered from a faulty tape player. Are People People? (Adrian "On-U-Sound" Sherwood Mix) I love this, though it sounds nothing like Depeche Mode at all. A stop/start rhythm with lots of strange sounds and bits of melody laid over the top. Adrian Sherwood fans will like it, DM fans may hate it. If you're a fan of both (like me) you'll LOVE it! Sea of Sin (Razorcats Mix) Not bad. Fly on the Windscreen (Touch Me Mix) OK, but sounds pretty similar to the original. Just Can't Get Enough (Rubber Band Mix) A cheesy house style cover version of "JCGE", with a few samples of the original chorus, as well as the "Flexible" chorus near the beginning. Lots of cliched samples too. To Have and To Hold (Icelandic Taster Mix) A much more orchestral sounding mix. Pretty good, but the sound is murky. Dangerous (Hazchemix) House instrumental with many interesting sounds. Sounds very different from the original. A Question of Lust (Minimal Mix) Nice mix, with keyboard sounds and voice, but hardly any percussion. Long instrumental break at the end, with drums and weird noises. But it's so easy to get, why did they put it on this bootleg? Death's Door (Skeleton Key Mix) This seems to be a re-edit of the Jazz mix. The sound is very murky. There are a few extra keyboard sounds and samples, and lots of delayed vocals. Not bad, it preserves the feel of the original fairly well. I Sometimes I Wish I Was Dead (Flexi Mix) Sounds very much like the original. Sound quality is good except for LOTS of vinyl static. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: VampLestat Are People People (On-U-Sound) A BAD song, and not that hard to find. Sea of Sin (Razor Cuts Mix) If this is the "Ultra Hot Razor Cuts" version by Art of Mix, I haven't heard it, but a DJ friend has and didnt even bother to copy it, it was so poorly done. Question of Lust (Minimal Mix) Basically the same song with a wierd couple minutes of strange keyboards and tweaked, quite vocals at the end. 12) Sometimes I Wish I was Dead (7" Flexi Mix) Not a very different mix from the original version. =============================================================================== DJ's Revenge ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Chad Maier This three-part series is comparable with the rest of the bootlegs as having the best quality. This was the first bootleg to my knowledge produced by some DJ's in Germany. Great disc! QUALITY = 9 Just Can't Get Enough (Disconet Mix) 7:43 An *okay* mix A Question of Time (Class-X Mix) 6:55 A classic razormaid mix Behind the Wheel (Disconet Mix) 6:56 One of the best BTW remixes! Get The Balance Right (Class-X Mix) 6:25 Awesome razormaid classic! Little 15 (Bogus Brothers Mix) 6:05 Incredible dance mix! Wow! Behind the Wheel (Razormaid Mix) 6:22 Great quality remix. Strangelove (Razormaid Mix) 6:57 Better quality than URT mix ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Bennett McElwee Sound quality overall is good. As for the individual tracks: Photographic (Some Bizarre Edit) Sound quality good. This version uses different synth sounds to make a harder-sounding mix than the album version. Personal Jesus (Kazan Cathedral Mix) Housier than the original, with samples saying, "the Lord Jesus Christ himself" and "I'm not crazy any more!". Just Can't Get Enough (Disconet Mix) Fairly good cut-and-paste of the Schizo mix, with a whooping sort of UFO sound used throughout. A Question Of Time (Class-X Remix) Standardish Razormaid thing. Has a female "oh!" sound used throughout. Behind The Wheel (Disconet Mix) Very unremarkable. Get The Balance Right (Class-X Remix) Another standard cut-and-paste. Little 15 (Bogus Brothers Mix) Adds a funky beat to the track. Sound quality is OK except for a bit of vinyl noise. The actual mix is great though--some thought was put into the arrangements. A really good version of the song. Dreaming Of Me (Discotrax Mix) A few effects added to the original, and a longer instrumental break. A fairly good mix, but there is a bit of vinyl noise. Pleasure, Little Treasure (Razormaid Mix) Quite good, the mix breaks down into the song's component parts (drum breaks, BVs etc.) towards the middle and end. A few extra samples and instrumental sounds. Behind The Wheel (Razormaid Mix) Similar to the original. There's a sample of a car going past at one point, and a long instrumental break at the end. Strangelove (Razormaid Mix) Instrumental breaks at the beginning and end, otherwise nothing unusual. Dangerous (Art of Mix) A bit of minor cutting and pasting, and the standard long instrumental bit at the end, finishing with some zooming car sounds. Dodgy sound quality for a few seconds in the middle. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Chad Beckett Little 15 (Violation 15) mixed by the bogus Brothers is the best bootleg mode mix I've heard. They competely revampted the tune. The bass line is very effective, as is the incidental cresendo wave synth added on top. The drum additions are also first class. My only disappointment is that the origional source was so poor. The transcription from the Bogus Brothers remix 12' to CD was poor. The 'real' Little 15 was badly recorded as well. Though I realize they had to use vinyl to speed up the song, better recording equipment would have really enhanced the refinished product. This one song, easily, was worth the 25 bucks it cost me for the CD. =============================================================================== The Second Strike ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Chad Maier Continuing a great tradition started by DJ's, the quality of these tracks are great (except one), and has THE best razormaid remixes available! QUALITY = 8.5 Halo (Bogus Brothers Mix) 6:33 Not great quality. Rumor has it that this mix along with the Uncomfortable mix were available on a promo where only 50 original copies were pressed before they were caught! People Are People (Razormaid) 6:25 The best mix of PaP you will ever find! Happiest Girl (Razormaid) 6:51 Incredible best-quality mix of this song! Enjoy the Silence (Razormaid) 6:06 Breathtaking. I'd like to hear this mix on the dance floor! Master And Servant (Razormaid) 8:02 Pretty cool. World In My Eyes (Razormaid Mix) 7:45 Samples galore make this the shit! Sea of Sin (Razormaid Mix) 6:27 Stellar performance by the guys from LA! Policy of Truth (Art of 'Memorandum' Mix) 8:08 The Art of Mix people complete these incredible Violator remixes with a hit mix of their own! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Michael Thomas Halo (Bogus Brothers' Mix /6:33) Very poor sound quality. It sounds as if it was recorded with the recording level set far too high. There is a lot of distortion. Definitely NOT worth listening to. People Are People (Razormaid Mix /6:25) Pretty good. Standard Razormaid type mix, though, ie, bits and pieces of the original song cut and pasted together in different places. Happiest Girl (Razormaid Mix /6:51) Likewise, a standard type Razormaid remix. Sound quality is also not that great, but still much better than Halo. Enjoy The Silence (Razormaid Mix /6:06) Somewhat better then the first three tracks. It contains samples from other ETS remixes as well, unlike the PAP and HG remixes which seem to use only the original song. Master And Servant (Razormaid Mix /8:02) Good sound quality. Seems to contain bits and pieces from the Slavery Whip Mix and US Black and Blue Mix. A fine remix of MAS, in my opinion. World In My Eyes (Razormaid Mix /7:45) An interesting remix of WIME. The phrase "music, nonstop" is repeated several times during the song. It also contains a sample from the song Leave in Silence". It's Called A Heart (Razormaid Mix /6:48) Not a very notable remix of ICAH. Sounds a lot like the Emotion Mix and Emotion Dub of ICAH. Luckily, it contains no samples from the Slow Mix. :) Sea Of Sin (Razormaid Mix /6:27) It doesn't sound like Razormaid did much remixing on this song. It seems as if they just took one of the remixes off of the WIME single and did some very slight alterations to it. Policy Of Truth (Art Of 'Memorandum' Mix /8:08) About halfway through this mix it blends into Strangelove, then back to POT. It sounds like there are quiet samples from other DM songs at the same point, but i'm not quite sure which ones. I'd recommend going out and getting it if possible. Aside from the shit-mix of Halo, it's a very good compilation, as DJs Revenge was. -- I was listening to Second Strike for the first time in a while tonight and I noticed that it didn't sound quite as bad as I had originally thought. I think that this is mostly due to the fact that I got new speakers. With the older speakers, there was a ton of distorted bass throughout the disc. But now the bass sounds a lot nicer, smoother, less distorted. I'm not trying to say that there is no distortion at all, but it's been greatly reduced. It's only prominant on the first track. I think the problem they had with this disc is that they recorded it at too high of a recording level. Much too high. I notice that the bass is quite strong regargdless of which speakers are used. Anyway. Enough of this rambling. I just wanted to say that Second Strike isn't as bad as I had first thought and if you didn't get it for the reason of people slamming it's sound quality, you might want to reconsider. Oh, and as an almost-afterthought, the Ivan Megamix still sounded pretty bad with all of it's scratchiness and record popping. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Bennett McElwee Halo (Bogus Brothers' Mix) Shocking sound quality, guaranteed to make even the most expensive speakers sound cheap. The actual mix is good, with a bigger beat and some nice drums. There's a vocal sample of "halo" used a lot throughout. This would be a great mix, but the sound is so bad it's painful to listen to. Bogus indeed. People Are People (Razormaid Mix) Nice mix. Contains some vocal "let me take you on a trip" samples, and the same Twins Peaks chords used in Moby's "Go". The instrumental breaks are interestingly done, keeping the feel of the original but adding new twists. Happiest Girl (Razormaid Mix) Big booming beat, and some occasional nice drum samples. The heavy beat sounds a bit squelchy when turned up loud, due perhaps to a bit of distortion (thankfully nowhere near as bad as Halo though). Enjoy The Silence (Razormaid Mix) Varied mix containing lots of different instrumental sounds, including some from the Quad mix. Master And Servant (Razormaid Mix) Sound like the official mixes cut and pasted together. Behind The Wheel/Route 66 (Ivan Megamix) A long version of the officially-released megamix. World In My Eyes (Razormaid Mix) A "spot the sample" mix. Starts out with some Kraftwerk samples: "Music, non-stop" from "Musique Non Stop", and various bits from the Computer World album. Heavily processed vocals near the beginning, and lots of little synthy sounds. Later a riff from Snap's "The Power", and the "Woo woo"s from "Leave In Silence". There's even a bit of "World In My Eyes" :) Overall this is a very busy mix, quite good if you like that sort of thing. It's Called A Heart (Razormaid Mix) Not bad, with a nice oscillating bass sound reminiscent of Donna Summer's I Feel Love". Sea Of Sin (Razormaid Mix) Samples Enya's "Orinoco Flow" for sixteen bars in the middle. Otherwise a standard cut 'n' paste, but quite a good one. Policy Of Truth (Art Of 'Memorandum' Mix) Starts with some bits from "Enjoy The Silence" before leaping into "Policy Of Truth". Later during an instrumental break we get bits of one of the Strangelove" remixes and some faint "Just Can't Get Enough"s! Again, a busy mix, and quite enjoyable. =============================================================================== The Third Strike ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Chad Maier Rounding out a great three-part series, this great-quality disc adds more razormaid and other great mixes! QUALITY = 9 Enjoy the Silence (Indefinite Mix) 9:08 Much better quality than URT2. But Not Tonight (Margouleff Mix) 6:17 Different mix than URT2. Strangelove (Joseph Watt Remix) 7:08 Similar to razormaid mix. Remotivate Me (Joseph Watt Remix) 7:59 Pretty cool. New Dress (Razormaid) 6:45 Climatic, Stimulating, Finger-licking good mix for Di-hard fans! Nodisco (Razormaid) 5:54 First awesome rmaid mix off of first album! World in My Eyes (Mayhem Mode) 4:58 AKA LCD Bong20 mix. Good mix! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Bennett McElwee Enjoy The Silence (Indefinite Mix) Mostly just a cut and paste of the many various official mixes. Sound quality is just OK, with a hissy high end. Spoken voice samples at about 2:50 saying something like "Let's take a trip". Funny little beeps near the end. Quite good, but the sound does detract from the mix a bit. But Not Tonight (Robert Margouleff Mix) Nice mix, nice instrumentation, not too different from the original. Overall it's very, erm, nice. Strangelove (Joseph Watt Remix) Standard Strangelove remix, nothing special, but quite OK. (Set Me Free) Remotivate Me (Joseph Watt Remix) A good extended mix. Good ending, with just vocals, then a mini-noise burst right at the end. Standard long instrumental bits. New Dress (Razormaid Mix) A cut and paste remix with (yawn) long instrumental bits. Pretty good, but nothing astounding. Nodisco (Razormaid Mix) Good cut and paste. World In My Eyes (Mayhem Mode) A nice warm-sounding house mix by Jon Marsh. Sounds like his band (The Beloved). Everything Counts (Alan Moulder Remix) Excellent minimal house dub mix. Route 66 (Nile Rodgers Mix) Quite good, not too different, but the instrumental bits are restructured and there is an effect put on the vocal at some points. Behind The Wheel (DJ Remix Edit) Just an edited version. Photographic (On-USound Remix) Vinyl pops faintly audible. The mix is a remix of the "Some Bizarre" album version, not the "Speak And Spell" version. It contains samples of a camera drive motor and some other extra sounds. The first verse is spaced out a bit, and some sort of oscillating effect is put on the whole track. I really like this mix. I Sometimes Wish I Was Dead (On-USound Remix) Again, some vinyl static is audible. The mix itself seems pretty similar, maybe with some EQ, but I'm not sure. =============================================================================== The Fourth Strike ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: John Underwood The sound quality is definitely better the URT 3 (my only other bootleg). Overall: Very good sound quality (9/10) for tracks 1-9 Mediocre sound quality for track 10 (6-7/10) Mediocre sound quality for tracks 11-12 (7-8/10) Random notes: I'm quite happy with this purchase. The last three tracks have worse sound quality than the rest of the disc, but I think they are still better than, for example, the two Martin Gore outtakes on Ultra Rare Trax 3. So, you might give them a different rating. Enjoy The Silence (Promo Mix) An edit; not bad, but nothing that interesting either. A Question Of Lust (Margouleff Remix) Very good mix; not overdone, maybe somewhat _underdone_, but still quite good (although a little short). Just Can't Get Enough (On USound Remix) Lots of samples and a great deal of mixing going on here, including samples of a live version. I think it's pretty good. (slightly worse sound quality) Master And Servant (Hammerhead Mix) Good except for the "POWER" sample (maybe from a radio station announcer?) which is used just _way_ too much. Starts off with 'Treat me like a dog' intro (shorter) from the Slavery Whip Mix. Never Let Me Down Again (Groovy Mix) First 40 seconds is a recording of a scan through a radio dial. Then it starts off with the regular music except that right before the first drum beat, it repeats the intro music again. It does this a number of times before it actually starts (cool effect). The rest is pretty much the same as the original version, until the end, when the Aggro Mix picks up and finishes a couple of minutes later. Groovy! It's Called A Heart (Prehistoric Mix) Sounds like something Razormaid might do. Its good, somewhat complex, but it still isn't great (perhaps because this isn't really my favorite song to begin with). World In My Eyes (Ultimix) Lots of samples (including "enjoy the silence"). I think a little too much mixing is being attempted. Ok, but not my favorite. Rush (Dub Mix) A percussion sequence repeated during the whole song. Short excerpts of music from the original version is interspersed throughout--the excerpt is played then abruptly cut off. I think the only lyrics used are: "Open your sensitive mouth, hold out your delicate hand" and "When I come up, when I rush, I rush for you." I Want You Now (No. 5 Mix) A drum machine sequence repeated throughout the song. A very slightly edited version of the song is played about one-and-a-half times, then the last two full minutes of the song consist of only the drum sequence. A bad excuse for a remix. Here Is The House (Sung by Martin) Poor recording, but since it is probably a demo or something similar, I guess it is excusable. "Body and soul come together, as we come closer together" is replaced with "Colors and shapes merge together, as we come closer together." A few other subtle differences, other than it being very bare-bones and highly unproduced. Violence (unreleased track) I Feel No Guilt (unreleased track) Don't have any idea what album these were left off of. They're ok I guess, but I can also see why they were not released (although they're better than, say, "Work Hard" :-) I think IFNG is the better of the two. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Chad Maier First, the M & S and NLMDA remixes are on the tail end of the PIMP megamix. I thought that the Rush mix was the same as that on the SOFAD (remixes) disc, but it is in fact slightly different; the regular remixes are better. I Want You now is, as mentioned, an edit with drumbeats, however, I believe that it is the "Funky Mix" by the Bogus Brothers - can anyone back me up? Here is the House - 'Colors and Shapes merge together, as we come closer together' - a mix that defies explanation, it is cool, sounds like it's played with ancient keyboards and Martin singing leads *and* backups at the same time - this song and the next two make the disc worth the money!!! Violence - 'Violence, Infatuation' - a very catchy tune, reminds me of a more upbeat Shake the Disease - very cool, sounds like it was made before Violator, perhaps even earlier, also has samples from Recoil (song '#1') I Feel No Guilt - sounds like it was made around the same time as Violence, and is pretty good. The sound quality for these last three songs is *OK*. IMHO, Here is the House is the coolest 'new' track, with Violence a close 2nd. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: hcheng@merengue.seas.upenn.edu (Howard Cheng) Rage mail order in England claims that the last 2 tracks on Fourth Strike are Alan Wilder demoes! =============================================================================== The Fifth Strike ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Bennett McElwee Halo (Comfortable mix) The Bogus Brothers mix. The recording on the Second Strike was so bad that they included a better version here. Naturally, they renamed it to make the CD more appealing. The sound quality is much better--I bet they just copied this from URT3, because the quality is similar. World In My Eyes (Bogus Brothers' dub) A good mix, with bits 'n' pieces of the official remixes together with new percussion bits and sounds. Definitely a dance mix, but really interesting to listen to as well. This is one of my favourite mixes of WIME. Fools (unreleased version) This has always been one of my favourite DM songs, and this version is a pretty good one. The xylophone riff is different, and there are a few other differences from the regular version. This sounds like an early mix of the single version. It sounds as if it has been mastered from vinyl, so either there's a vinyl bootleg of this, or there's an official test pressing or acetate or something, probably worth its weight in gold... Flexible/Just Can't Get Enough (Hot Trax mix) Dated house music with DM samples. Nothing (Justin Strauss remix) Very monotonous beat (a la Kraftwerk) works quite well. In fact the track reminds me very much of a cross between DM and "Electric Cafe"-era Kraftwerk. People Are People (On-U Sound remix) This is great. Adrian Sherwood put just the right amount of weird noise in this track to make it much more interesting... Master And Servant (On-U Sound remix) whereas this one is much more 'on the edge'. As first I hated it, but It's growing on me. The buzzing and bleeping is annoying but also endearing (in a weird way), but if you didn't like "Are People People?" then you'll probably hate this. =============================================================================== The Seventh Strike ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: David Irish Overall I like this disc a lot and it was worth the $27 I paid for it. Black Wax Medley An ok megamix (w/ heavy emphasis on Strangelove). Sound quality 8/10 Judas (Strange Version) Basically the same as the original with an echo-like voice repeating much of what Martin sings. I don't care for it very much (I'm not a big Judas fan-so sue me!). It is a little over-bassed (slightly distorted), so quality 9/10. I Feel You (More Fun Mix) Quite good. Almost too good to be a bootleg mix, makes me think it might just be a rare legitimate mix. 10/10 on sound quality. Mix of Faith and Devotion Very long, but quite good. The mother of all megamixes. Sound quality 10/10. Just Can't Get Enough (DJ International Rec.-Mix) It's the song It Takes Two (1990 club song) w/out the words (just the Yah...Hey") with Just Can't Get Enough playing over it. I don't care for it too much. Sound quality 7/10. Strange Love (Fresh Ground-Mix) Sound quality 10/10. Violator Mix Quite good. Sound quality 10/10. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: ??? Black Wax Medley - A medley of DM songs mixed together Judas (strange Version) - Unique version of Judas with phasing and whispering of the lyrics in the background. I Feel You (More Fun Mix) - Very good Mix of Faith and Devotion - The ultimate medley remix. There must be more than 50 different DM songs in this medley. Just Can't Get Enough - Noisy James Brown overused sample in the background. Strange Love (Fresh Ground-Mix) - Very good mix Violator Mix - Excellent! For an unofficial product, the quality is very good. I think it is one of the best strikes thus far. =============================================================================== The Classic Techno Mixes Vol.1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Chad Maier Great Megamixes! Some disturbance on the high end, but otherwise good quality. QUALITY = 7 Classic Modes 11:41 Decent megamix of classic Dmode tunes Megamode 1 17:47 Pretty cool megamix of tunes up to MFTMasses. Megamode 2 14:17 Even better megamix of mostly MFTM tunes. Great Mix! Celebration Mix 16:32 Righteous, bone-chilling megamix of Black Celebration tunes & earlier songs ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Andrew Bennett Quality-wise, it's not bad. I've only previewed it briefly since its purchase. One of the mixes starts off with "Little 15", with clearly audible vinyl pops. Other than that, it sounds ok. =============================================================================== The Classic Techno Mixes Vol.2 The Secret Remixes ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Chad Maier Less megamixes, new songs, rarities! QUALITY = 7.5 Good disc! Just Can't Get Enough (Mastermix) 5:31 2nd best remix with Yaz samples! Master and Servant (Hammerhead mix) 8:11 B-side of the incredible Pimp Mix (which should be put on disc), AKA M&S (Power MIx). Okay mix. Never Let Me Down Again (Groovy Mix) 7:35 Similar to the Tsangarides Mix, has a 1 min intro of flipping through radio stations! In my opinion, the best mix of NLMDA, also on B-side of the eclectic pimp mix! World In My Eyes (Mixx-Rite Remix) 5:35 Cool remix with samples from Enjoy the Silence, scratching, an overall house feel and other samples! The Official Megamix 8:21 Pretty cool megamix ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: hizcb1 I scanned through a little of each track at the dealer's. The JCGE track was the best mix of it I've ever heard. The drum production was excellent; bordering on BB Little 15. The Official MegaMix also sounds promising. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Andrew Bennett Excellent sound quality. Mixes are OK for dj/bootleg mixes. See notes on certain tracks. Master and Servant / Hammerhead Mix This is the Power mix from the Classic Beats remix bootleg. It has that annoying "Power" vocal sample all over. World In My Eyes / Mixx-rite remix Basically the Kiss-a-mix with some more samples. Deathwish / remix The On-U-Sound remix from Ultra Rare trax #2. Sound quality not nearly as good as U-R-T#2, but still ok. The Official Megamix Pretty good sound quality. =============================================================================== Digital Razormaids ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Rithy P. Lu Sound quality: top form. But Not Tonight was interesting: a hybrid extended and Margouleff mix. =============================================================================== Classic Remixes ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Chad Maier Along with DJ's, one of the first bootleg cd's produced. Not the best bootleg around, however. QUALITY = 7 Breathing In Fumes (Razormaid Mix) 5:28 This stunning version of the remix of Stripped makes this cd worth any amount of money you pay for it!!!! New Dress (Razormaid) 6:45 Incredible, find better quality on 3rd Stike. Master...Set Me Free (Razormaid) 9:11 A stellar example of what really good mixing can do. Strangelove (Fresh Mix) 7:54 Great mix previously only on UK 12" promo. Just Can't Get Enough (Base Mix) 7:19 *okay* version. Master and Servant (Power Mix) 8:11 AKA Hammerhead mix. *okay* version. A Question of Lust 3:45 Credited to Robert Margouleff. Different intro. The Broadway Medly 13:08 Very good megamix! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Erik van Linstee Breathing In Fumes 5:28 This is basically the original except a bit shorter. New Dress 6:45 This is an extended version of New Dress. There is no fancy remixing, it is merely altered by repeating several parts. Master..Set Me Free 9:11 This track starts off as Master and Servant, goes into the Slavery Whip Mix and then leaps into Set Me Free (Remotivate Me). It is altered only a bit by cutting and pasting. Strangelove (Fresh Mix) 7:54 This track features the Pain Mix and a sample of an artist saying SUPER DJ. Again only a bit of cutting and pasting. Just Can't Get Enough (Base Mix) 7:19 This track is a mixture of the original and the live version as heard on the B-side of Love In Itself. The beat is alter a bit and the track is edited with a phase shifting device which makes it sound as if you're listening to from far off and the wind is taking away the sound periodically. Master And Servant (Power Mix) 8:11 This is the Slavery Whip Mix. It is edited a lot. There is a sample of a voice saying POWER every once in a while and the rest is cut up, repeating bit's and echoing parts repeatedly. A Question Of Lust 3:45 This comes closest to the remix on the limited edition cassette single. No special effects. It's Time For A New Life Megamix 11:41 This track has parts of the following songs, all strung together: Everything counts / People are People / Master and Servant / Just Can't Get Enough / See You / A Question Of Time / New Life The Broadway Medley 13:08 This track has parts of the following songs, all strung together: Strangelove (Simenon/Saunders remix) / People are People / Master and Servant / Behind The Wheel (remix) / Route 66 (Casualty Mix) / Just Can't Get Enough (Schizo Mix) / Set Me Free (Remotivate Me) Tracks 1-3 appear to be mastered from CD whereas the rest is mastered from vinyl. The overall sound quality is quite good. Distributed by Classic-Beats PO BOX 12047 San Francisco CA 94114 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Bennett McElwee Some vinyl noise is evident on most tracks, but not much. Overall sound quality is very good. Breathing In Fumes (Razormaid) Sounds very similar to the original. New Dress (Razormaid) An unremarkable cut and paste remix. Master/Set Me Free (Razormaid) A standard cut & paste of "M&S", with a very short bridge section after 4 minutes leading into a standard cut & paste "(SMF)RM". Actually, given that description, it's not bad at all. Strangelove (Fresh Mix) A good remix with a different puchy beat. And of course that "Super DJ" sample from Cameo's "Word Up". A very small amount of vinyl noise. Just Can't Get Enough (Base Mix) A really good mix of the regular version and a live version, with crowd noise, Dave saying "This is a 12-inch, so sing along", and a thumping beat. The vocals are a bit too far back in the mix sometimes, but this is still a great mix despite a tiny bit of vinyl noise. Master And Servant (Power Mix) Good cut and paste mix, with effects and repeated and echoed samples from the original mixes. Features a voice saying "Power" all over the beginning of the track, sounding like something from an American radio station. Some vinyl noise. A Question Of Lust A few nice effects in the background, otherwise similar to the album version. Sounds very radio-friendly, a bit poppier and happier than the original. A good mix. It's Time For A New Life Megamix A good mix, with bits of songs showing up in other songs--more mixed- up than some megamixes. Good sound, with a tiny amount of vinyl noise. The Broadway Medley A good mix, because some of the songs mixed together are remixes rather than the standard single versions. This makes for a more interesting mix...but the songs aren't as mixed-up as in the previous track. =============================================================================== DPM ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Chad Maier Only has two megamixes on it, but they are excellent! People say that this is a pretty common disc. QUALITY = 9 Megamix part 1: Great mix of old tunes! Megamix part 2: 2nd best mix of Violator tunes! =============================================================================== The Niagara Radiostation Mix ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Chad Maier Great quality mixes of even more mixes nobody's heard of! QUALITY = 8 Celebration Mix 6:40 Strange - about 1/3 of the original mix Question of Time - Timeless mix - 7:05 Strange - About the Second third of the Celebration mix. When you add the times up, though, it doesn't equal the length of the original. Question of Time (Instrumental Dance Version) 1:48 Just how it sounds. Route 66 (Rubble Dubble Mix) 3:59 Different version of R66 - it's cool! Set Me Free (US-Radio Mix) 4:34 Starts with Behind the Wheel, mixes into Set Me Free - sweet. The Official Megamix. 8:21 Pretty cool. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Bennett McElwee This bootleg doesn't really contain anything that can't be got anywhere else--most of the tracks are mislabelled, they seem to be mostly just Razormaid mixes and the usual megamixes. My theory is that it's just a recording of a radio broadcast (the sound overall is good though). Celebration Mix A really good mix, notable because it contains some good album tracks, not just the hits. Sound is good but not perfect--it's slightly fuzzy at the high end and there are a few vinyl pops at the beginning. On this CD this is tracked as two parts. The tracks used in the mix are: 1: Dressed In Black / Blasphemous Rumours / New Dress / Everything Counts / Two Minute Warning / Flies On The Windscreen / Stripped 2: World Full Of Nothing / A Question Of Lust / Here Is The House / Ice Machine (live) / A Question Of Time / The Meaning Of Love / Black Celebration Question of Time (Instrumental Dance Version) This is just the first 1:48 of the New Town mix. Behind The Wheel/Route 66 (Rubble Dubble Mix) The standard Behind The Wheel/Route 66 megamix, sped up to about 135 BPM. It's blended into the next track, and the tracking is screwed up. Set Me Free (US-Radio Mix) Sounds very normal. The last 13 seconds is taken up with applause. Nothing (Dallas Raw Mix) Opens with about 2 seconds of the Dallas theme, then into Nothing, seeming punchier than usual. A few sound effects, sirens etc. The song is cut and pasted to make it a lot longer. There's about one more second of the Dallas theme in the middle. The Official Megamix A hit mix. Good, but the sound is not great. There's a bit of hiss on the high end (especially the S's). Contains the following songs: Everything Counts / People Are People / Master And Servant / Just Can't Get Enough / See You / The Meaning Of Love / New Life =============================================================================== Fourplay ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Chad Maier Overall, the quality is pretty damn good, about an 8 out of 10. =============================================================================== Songs Of Faith And Devotion: Remix ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Michael Swan The cover is the same pic as on the inside of the IFY CD, with the four lads, and has "Remix" written in the bottom left hand corner. The CD itself has just a big "REMIX" written on it, with the usual copyright messages. As for the songs themselves, Judas, One Caress, GRWM & Rush are completely crap, Higher love is mixed with Steve Winwoods version, Condemnation now has a dance beat to it, like this one a lot, but has some stupid annoying beeps all the way through IFY, WIMS & Mercy in you are OK, nothing special. In your room is the best on the thing, has a harder sound to it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Daniel Ouellette What these guys did is took each song from SoFaD and added a beat (and in some cases a couple of extra samples) to the song. I haven't finished listening to the whole thing, but I'm about half way through and I don't expect it to get any better. In most cases the beat overpowers and in some cases completely drowns out the song itself. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Michael Thomas The DM guru at a local store said that he had a hard time finding it. Judging by the quality of it (actually, it has no quality. It's so bad that you can't mention it in the same sentence as the word "quality") I would hope that it continues to be hard to find and nobody buys it. God, it's awful. --- I found the SOFAD remix album a couple of days ago, and heedless of all warnings, I bought it. In retrospect, I should have listened to the warnings. It really is bad. The crapiness isn't in the sound quality, though, it's in the remix quality. The sound quality is actually not all that bad. In most cases they just took a tape loop with some music on it (either their own drum beat or something from the song) and played random lyrics from the song at various times. Often, the tape loop goes on and you sit there hoping for something different. In all, the whole thing is repetitive, generic, very poorly done, and painful to the ears. These aren't even amusingly bad remixes, as Love in Itself 4 and the It's Called a Heart (slow mix) are. They are just plain rotten. My advice is that unless you're a die-hard must-have everything collector, don't get it. If, however, you do need to have everything then you'll ignore this warning anyway and do what you want. (like I did. :) Songs of Faith And Devotion -- Remix I Feel You There's a small voice that keeps repeating either Depeche Mode or Fishbone in the beginning. Then it cuts into the normal beat of IFY (the part just after the car squealing in the original) and a sample of Dave singing "Babylon" is repeated. Every now and then another line from the song is put in. The normal beat is repeated throughout the song. It ends with the little voice repeating its phrase. Very generic. Walking In My Shoes Again, they took one part of the music and repeated it throughout the song. Samples of the lyrics are played throughout the mix. Again, very generic. Condemnation This time they took a different approach to remixing the song. It sounds as if they just took the song and added a simple repetitive drum beat to it. That's it. Note that the length of both the remix and original song are the same. Mercy In You This is another one of the IFY put-the-music-on-a-tape-loop-and-sample-the- lyrics type remixes. One note: On this type of remix they don't just sample the lyrics, but the music that is in the background of the lyrics, too. Apparently, they just used a tape loop and a sampler, and didn't bother trying to separate the music from the vocals when they sampled it. The result is a very bad sounding combination. Again, the remix and original song have the same length. Judas The beat repeated in this mix is the beat to Get Right With Me. There's also what sounds like the uilleann pipes part of the beginning of Judas put on the tape loop. I'm not positive on that one, though. The lyrics are again sampled and played at random points throughout the mix. In Your Room The vocals on this mix are awful. They go from quiet to normal as if the tape that it was being played from was worn out. For this mix, they replaced the drum beat with a different-sounding drum and added a clicking sound that is very similar to a clock ticking quickly. The setup of the mix is similar to the original song, though, in that they didn't just sample the lyrics. As far as I can tell, they used the original song, but just replaced/altered the drum beat. The length of the remix and original song are almost identical. Get Right With Me What do you get when you pass a great song through a high pass filter and add your own drum beat? Crap. I'm not joking when I say that it sounds like they did just this. The result is that Dave's voice sounds very tinny, as do the choir singers and music. At least they had the sense to add their own drum beat, I guess. Rush There is a simple drum beat (and more of the fast clock ticking) in this one. It's basically the loop-and-sampled-lyrics type of mix. They tend to overplay the part where Dave sings "open your sensitive mouth, hold out your delicate arms". The mix will have about 5 seconds of the tape loop, then about 5 seconds of the loop+lyrics. This is repeated throughout the song. One Caress I have absolutely no idea where they got the music(?) for this one. It definitely did _not_ come from DM. Einsturzende Neubauten, maybe, but not DM. As usual, they take samples of the vocals and play them at random times throughout the song(?). Higher Love The drum beat is on a tape loop, and they alternate between playing a random Higher Love (DM) lyric and a Higher Love (Steve Winwood) lyric. The Steve Winwood lyrics is just the part in the song that goes "bring me a higher love". Occasionally they will combine two Dave vocals: either "higher love" with another line from the song, or "Oooooh" and another line from the song. =============================================================================== Songs Of Faith And Devotion: Strange Versions ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: M Dhoopher The cover is exactle the same as SOFAD except it is in Brown and Red. All the mixes are much better than any other bootleg mixes I've heard. Even better than the Razormaid mixes, the Art mixes and bogus brother mixes which I previously thought were the best. Tracks 2,3,4 and 7 tend to get too repetetive but the ones to look for are Rush, I Feel you and Mercy in You ,which I think to be the best because they are the least repetitive. Mind you, all the others are f**king excellent for bootleg mixes. I Feel You (Turkish Slaughter mix) Starts with drum beat and then goes into the guitar playing what is IFY but it is played in a different arrangement giving a different melody. Samples of dave singing "I feel you" and "This is the morning of our love, its just the dawning of our love" as taken from the HATH mix of IFY. Half way the static blurts in and stops the song which blasts into life two seconds later. Over the top of all this is a loop of different keyboard chords. Walking In My Shoes (Roger G's Ritual Of Life mix) Totally different music. Its a piano playing with a drum beat in the background. Samples of Dave singing "Try walking in my shoes, you'll stumble in my footsteps" as taken from th random carpet mix (I think). Also the first verse is looped twice at the beginning followed by more try walking in my..." then it is repeated again. Some wierd backing noises kick up towards the beginning. Walking In My Shoes (Mouth and Ziska Marriage mix) Starts the same as the album mix,but it is looped about 4 times with an increasing drum beat in the background. As with IFY the beginning is sampled in different abouts and arranged to provide a new melody. The second verse is the one used in this mix along with the second half of the first verse, (ie starts with "morality would frown upon..." and ends with the part "I'm not looking for absolution..." rather than "I'm not looking for a clearer conscience..." as in th original song) Condemnation (Arpeggitator mix) Starts with keyboard synth style music before sampling "Condemnaton/why/ because my duty/was only to beauty/that was my crime" that is the only part of the song used in the whole mix. Tends to get very repetitive. Still a good mix. Mercy In You (Roger G's Old School mix) Drum beat with added synth. Samples of "Boys say go" along with multiple samples of "for the mercy in you". Good mix. Rush (Red and Blue Acid mix) This is a very very good mix of Rush. It starts with a single synth playing a very basic Rush melody (from the beginning of Rush). As it progresses a drum beat moves in and increases along with th synth before finally blasting into the first bars of Rush. Samples of the word "rush" are speeded up and liberally scattered in the mix. The line "I come up to meet you, up there somewhere" is repeated twice at the beginnig then once more half way through the song. Also used is the line "when I come up/when I rush/I rush for you". The added synth makes a solo run for a few bars during the middle before returning to Rush (album mix). One Caress (R.Mouth on the Search for K-Tel mix) Basically, it's just "one caress" with added noises of a waterfall or something in the background. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Bennett McElwee I Feel You (Turkish Slaughter mix) This is one of the best bootleg mixes I've heard. It follows the trend of including only a small amount of the original song; the rest is standard house music, which sounds strangely familiar to me. (The remixers either created their own music, or swiped it from somewhere else...) Anyway, the mix is a very good, very professional dance mix of IFY. Walking In My Shoes (Roger G's Ritual Of Life mix) Again, this mix has a lot of new instrumentation, and is very good. It sticks much more to the spirit of the original than the previous track does. The only blemish is that the vocals sound as if they've gone through a high-pass filter (which they probably have). Walking In My Shoes (Mouth and Ziska Marriage mix) A good solid mix, this doesn't really add much to the original. Condemnation (Arpeggitator mix) Adds a synth line and percussion to the original. Not bad. Mercy In You (Roger G's Old School mix) Good mix, adding more instrumentation but retaining the feel of the original. The added percussion is a slowed down sample from Snap's "The Power" (or Deff Boys' "Swing" or one of the many songs using that beat...). Judas (Whispered Sex mix) This is really just the original Judas with whispered BVs echoing the sung vocals. Nothing radical, but still quite good. Get Right With Me (Blast Da Loopda Loop mix) Start out really well, with lots of added synth sounds. It's great for about the first 2-3 minutes, but then gets very repetitive. Rush (Red and Blue Acido mix) Excellent mix, along the lines of the Jack Dangers mix. One Caress (R.Mouth on the Search for K-Tel mix) The original song with added "ambient" sound effects. OK. Higher Love (Roger G. Doublespeedbeat mix) A very fast beat to this song, and different instrumentation. The beat slows down to normal speed during the vocal bits. Not bad. =============================================================================== The Songs Of Martin L. Gore ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Michael Thomas I've only seen one copy of this cd so far (the one I bought), but I'd expect that it'll become more available soon since in my opinion, it's one of the better ones out there. The sound quality is _excellent_. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: The Brown Bottle The first version of "AQOL" was different from the album version, but I'm not sure where it came from. Other than that, the other songs seemed straight off the albums. Sound quality seemed fine, though I wasn't listening through a very good stereo. =============================================================================== Violator--Limited Edition Remix Album ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Chad Maier The quality isn't that great, a few of them are good, a few suck (like Halo and flexidisc versions), about a 7 out of 10. =============================================================================== Dancing In My Shoes ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Chad Maier The last two mixes are UNRELEASED - that is, I can't find them on any other remix bootlegs, singles, promos, ANYTHING! Just Can't Get Enough kicks ass - as good as the Rubberband mix, it starts out with that Yeah! Woo! from Rob Base - It Takes Two. Very houseish, has sirens and heavy bass. Stranglove is - frustrating. It's a very simple mix, although it starts out differently from any other mix. It's not the razormaid mix, nor the network charts mix, not off of the promo cd, not the fresh mix - it's frustrating, because it sounds like the kind of mix you'd find off of a cd single, very well made. The times differ from any other, so I'm pretty sure it's an unreleased mix. OK, the 25 minute megamix - this mix KICKS ASS! It's very well made, quality is good as the Pimp mix, New Mode Mega '90, and Front-Dep-Nitz. This isn't one of those where they transfer to one song and just play it for a while - it actually remixes the songs in a razormaidish way, almost all of the songs are mixed up, have added beats and sounds and words mixed in all the time, and best of all, it has SOFAD songs! It starts out by flashing just the words from three songs, everything counts, people are people, and leave in silence, then, in a distorted voice, cuts out the music and says, 'This is a new...Depeche Mode mix,' gives the intro for Strangelove, then mixes in the songs...SOFAD songs, all remixed differently from any yet released... Here's the song listing: I Feel You, Walking In My Shoes, Mercy In You, Enjoy the Silence (slow), Dangerous, Never Let Me Down Again, Love in Itself, Everything Counts, Policy of Truth, Little 15 (bogus bros), Enjoy the Silence, Strangelove, People are People, Blasphemous Rumours, World In My Eyes, Leave in Silence, Behind the Wheel, Just Can't Get Enough (live), Master and Servant, Get the Balance Right, Route 66 (beatmasters), Set Me Free (Remotivate Me), Pleasure Little Treasure, Personal Jesus, Work Hard (!), See You, Meaning of Love. Overall, awesome mix of new and old, all remixed, this disc is definitely worth the money just for this megamix! If you see it, I'd recommend picking it up. =============================================================================== Martin L. Gore's Studio Tapes ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Remixer All Tracks are sung by Martin, naturally, and have very mono sound quality. =============================================================================== Depeche Mode Reworked Vol.1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Bennett McElwee This CD is subtitled "The Different Studio Versions" (or something like that). I listened to the CD for about 3 minutes on ill-fitting headphones in the middle of a noisy record fair, so my impressions were vague at best. The first few tracks had poor sound quality, and were not very different from the studio versions. The later tracks were better, but some (like Rush) seemed to be roughly mixed, with the vocals being too loud in parts and soft in others. Mercy In You was good, with different instrumentation; but in the end I surprised myself by not buying the disc, because I didn't think the sound quality was that good. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Michael Mueller I could only listen to it shortly, but all I heard was crap. Those weren't really remixes, somebody just fucked around with an equalizer to delete some parts of songs and enhance others. Or he did that 'plug thing' that somebody mentioned on the list earlier, where a song sounds differently and you get to hear certain parts that you normally don't realize. =============================================================================== Philip's Modern Girl ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Michael Mueller Some of the tracks I can remember: WimE (bass mix; sounded very good), Somebody (with a different, selfmade piano intro), Stripped (Sex Shop extension or some other corny name), JcgE, PJ (with EC intro, pretty cool), Strangelove (a remix that is available on one of the Strikes), Faith Healer (promo version), Faith Healer (Germac remix?), Ets (the final Quad mix). There was more, but I can't remember. =============================================================================== Technopolis VII ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comments: Bennett McElwee Overall, this CD has very good sound quality. Somebody (Germix) is a good mix, filling out the instrumentation with some nice piano and an astoundingly wimpy drumbeat that complements the song perfectly. Strangelove (Powerhouse mix) sounds pretty much the same as all the other Strangelove mixes. Yawn. Actually, the best thing on the CD is Front 242's "Rhythm Of Time (Messengers From Neptune)", remixed by the Orb and previously available only on 7". =============================================================================== Thanks for reading.
