Flannery O\u2019Conner was a 20th-century American writer who* I discovered through a cryptic reference in the computer game The Trolley Problem<\/a><\/em>. This book is a posthumous compilation of her non-fiction writing, including some lectures she gave about<\/em> writing (one of my favourite topics). Her writing is full of dry, arch humour:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everywhere I go I\u2019m asked if the universities stifle writers. My opinion is that they don\u2019t stifle enough of them.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

And amusing turns of phrase:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The average reader is pleased to observe anybody\u2019s wooden leg being stolen.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

There are pieces covering various other topics including peacocks, Catholicism and everything in between. (That\u2019s such a clich\u00e9, and a nonsensical one at that: what topics could possibly be between peacocks and Catholicism?) But I enjoy her writing about writing the most. She wrote novels and short stories too \u2013 I\u2019ll be investigating those at some point too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
