One-click “To Read” list

Monday, 25 April 2005

I often stumble across intriguing web pages when I’m busy doing something else. Now I can save them with a single click, and easily come back to them later on, whether I’m at work or at home. Now you can do this too.

This uses Peter Parkes’s ingenious One del.icio.us click bookmarklet. As with so many things, you get the best results if you use Firefox, but it’s still useful if you use another browser and RSS reader.

  1. Save the To Read bookmarklet in Firefox’s Bookmarks Toolbar Folder. This puts a “To Read” button in the toolbar. (In Internet Explorer you can use the Links folder; I don’t know about other browsers.)
  2. Edit the bookmarklet and replace username with your del.icio.us user name.
  3. Go to any website and click your new “To Read” bookmarklet. Nothing much seems to happen, but…
  4. Go to del.icio.us/your-user-name/toread and you’ll see the site has been added to this new category.
  5. In Firefox, create a Live Bookmark for this RSS feed. (To do this, click the little orange box at the bottom-right of the Firefox window.)

Now whenever I’m on the Web, whether at home or at work, my “To Read” list is right there in the Bookmarks menu. If I’m somewhere else, I just go to del.icio.us and look at the toread category.

  1. Cool. Still kind of works, if however through their web form. But that’s the way I want it anyway, so I’m not complaining. 🙂
