i’m currently living in japan on a working-holiday visa. i arrived last october and will be heading back to canada in a couple week. my duration of time in japan will have been nine months by the time i leave. i’m currently working for a company as an english teacher for two months–my contract runs out on july 15th.
my question is, what is the proper tax that should be deducted from my salary? the company said they’re going to deduct 20% for tax because i’m a foreigner on a working-holiday visa, but that seems a bit high considering i’m only working for them for two and a half months. that’s half my salary going towards tax. i’ve looked up the income tax guide for foreigners on the national agency website: nta.go.jp. it says 5% for non residents. it doesn’t specify for foreigners on certain types of visa. if you could help me out, that’d be greatly appreciated.
