Hello, I am a chef here in U. S. and I just got back from Toya, Hokkaido. My trip was to find a position at a Windsor Hotel, Michel Bras Restaurant. Well I got the position I seeked for but the hotel wouldn’t sponsor my working visa. The chef told me to come back if I find a way to obtain a visa on my own. Well, while staying in Japan I made a few phone calls to find how to obtain a working visa on my own. The agency told me if I have 10 years of experience in the field w/ college diploma then I am qualified for a working visa. The agency quoted total cost of obtaining this visa is $4000.00. Is this legit? Because a friend who also applied previously took a full year to getting a working visa…. Thanks I am looking forward for your comment

Hi,
Ok I’m not sure if anyone can help me but my boyfriend is in the military and got orders to Japan, I want to go with him but we are not ready to get married. Is there any type of visa I can get, I don’t know the language however I do have a job that is based out of japan, I was hoping to avoid a working visa though. Thanks for any information.
Michael Choi: The normal rules is that you need to have a sponsor; plus a degree or ten years’ relevant experience. This does not automatically qualify you. The sponsor (employer) still has to show that they need to hire a foreigner rather than a local, and there is no guarantee how long the applicatin process can take. (As I mentioned somewhere, mine took about six weeks I think.) I don’t know what the cost is, but I suppose the fees might run into the thousands.
Tiffany: Based on the information you supplied, your best chances would be either a working holiday visa (if your country has that arrangement with Japan) or to get your own working visa by getting your employer to sponsor you from their Japanese offices.
Tony,
My case is quite similar to yours. My previous employer hasn’t given me the required documents–certificate of leave, tax certificate etc. Would like to know whether you received your renewed visa. Was there any hassle?
any opinion from any member would be welcome.
thanx

I am a first year student of university in Japan and I am a married .I call my wife in Jaqpan in the dependent visa of six months. So how can I apply for the visa…..
I have a question about a self-sponsored visa. I very much want to live in Japan to study and learn the language (better). I have a job here in the US (Software Architect) that would allow me to work remotely from pretty much anywhere I would choose. I understand that it would be trivial to come to Japan as an English instructor and get sponsorship, but my salary in the US is the equivalent of JPY 15.0M. Do you think it would be possible for me to self-sponsor given that I can show a source of income?
Alternatively, what is the minimum number of hours that I could work as an English instructor and still be able to get a sponsorship? The lowest contract I have seen (in a brief search) was something like 26hrs/wk.
Thanks!
Austin, unfortunately I don’t have much information on self-sponsorship. You might be able to find out about the requirements from the Immigration Information Centre or your Japanese embassy.
As for the English instructor workload, 26 hours sounds about right. I haven’t really investigated but I doubt you’d find much less than that.
Thank you for the information on this site.
I have wanted to spend some time in Japan for awhile now, possibly working in English education as a means to stay there for an extended time. My company just informed me that because of financial problems I’m going to be laid off for 6 months to a year. Seems like the perfect time to do this. As a 30-something man with only an associates degree in photo-journalism and barely 10 years experience in my field, how difficult (or impossible) would it be to obtain a work visa for one of the many jobs available to foreigners from the U.S. like English education? I really want to do this, but don’t know how big the obstacles are.
Thanks again!
Tim
