Hello. We wanna get divorced. My wife is Japanese, I am British, we live in Yokohama. How long will the procedere take if both parties mutally agree? MIKE
Mike, that’s not really my area. But I believe that mutual consent divorce can be done on the spot at the registry where your marriage was registered. Contact the registry to confirm this and get details (e.g. what the fees are and what ID you both will need).
radhika: You need to apply for permission to work part-time under a dependent visa. You should be able to find out about this as you apply for the visa. If you want to work full-time then you will probably have to apply separately for your own visa — you’ll need to be sponsored by some employer.
As for whether you can get an English teaching job, that’s not up to me! Have a look at the notes on teaching jobs for some useful information.
Dear Bennett,
Thanks a lot for your reply.
Also I have some further querries.
We are now waiting for my husband’s certificate of elgibility to come from Japan before we proceed to apply for the visas for him and I.
We will then be applying for the visas from New Delhi.
If I understand you correctly, is it at this stage that I request the Japanese embassy in India to give permission for part time work to me on my dependent visa.
Also let me thank u once again and inform you that this column of yours is a boon for people like us.
radhika: As far as I know, you apply for the part time work permission certificate after you have arrived in Japan and have received your dependent visa. You will need to give details of the kind of work you plan to do — a letter from a potential employer will also be helpful.
You should confirm this procedure with your Japanese embassy in India when you apply for your visas.
Dear Bennett,
Thanks a lot for your guidance and advice.
Hello,
In January, my husband and I will be relocating to Japan. My husband is sponsored with a work visa by his employer. They will provide me with a dependent visa. I am able to secure a contract position at my previous employer’s Tokyo branch.
So my questions are:
1) I saw Mark’s comments re: 28 hours/week. Mark (or anyone else), do you recall how long it took for your wife to attain this permit? Was it granted on the spot? I’m trying to figure out the delay between the time we arrive and when I can legally start working.
2) I was planning on arriving in Japan with a dependent visa. Work with it for 28hrs, and then convert it to a work visa so I could work full-time. Would it be better if I just apply for my own work permit rather than go through this dependent visa path?
3) Are there limitations to a work visa? My previous employer has offered a contractual position (albeit full-time), as opposed to a permanent employee position. Do the work visas require the post to be a permanent one?
Thanks much in advance.

Hi,
I am getting married to a person who have working visa in japan. He is staying in japan for last 4 years . I want to know if i can do a businness or part time job on dependent visa .
I will be very thankful if someone give me whole information .
Thanks
abc
Mari, it seems that part-time work permits are indeed issued on the spot. If you want to start work as soon as possible, you should do this; it can take 1-2 months to get the full work visa issued, assuming your employer will sponsor it.
The visa itself simply allows you to work in a specific field (e.g. engineering). The only limitation is that they are unlikely to grant you a visa for longer than the term of your contract. For example, if you have a one-year contract and you get a visa then it will be a one-year visa, but with a one-month contract you’ll probably not get a visa at all.
See the Dependent Visa section for more details. abc, you should look at this page too — the answer to your question is yes.
Dear Sir
I am Indian researcher staying in Tokyo. I am planning to marry an Indian girl ( in Nov 2005) and want to bring her along with me to Tokyo. I am telling her that after marry I will come to japan and sent ‘Certificate of Eligibility’. But she dont want to come here alone ( as its first time to take flight). Pls tell me if it possible to bring her on ‘tourist visa’ and change her status ‘Dependent’ after we come here. Pls tell me whether this is possible.
Thanking you sir
Dear Sir, I am Indian in Japan. I want to remarry in Japan. Will my new wife get information about my first marriage with a Japanese? Do I need to report my first marriage? Will she get information by the local government in Japan about my first marriage when we marry? Can I keep it secret? Kind answer much appreciated. Jal.
Hi,
I and my husband are Indians working in Japan on Work permit; with a leading company and earning handsomely. We have just had a son; but due to work commitments we would like to get a nanny to Japan to look after our son. Please advise on which visa category we can apply for the visa or the alternate visa category to ensure that her visa is granted.
Ashima, a quick look through the visa types shows that a Specified Visa (allowing “Designated Activities”) may be what you need to apply for. There are already lots of foreign caregivers in Japan, and I don’t know what the “standard” visa category for them is.
As with all tricky questions like this, you should contact your Immigration Information Centre for the official details.
Bennett,
Thank you for your advise. I’ll file for the Dependent Work Visa (28hrs) in January and will post an update in case it’s helpful to others.
Your site is really helpful!
I am an Indian student . I have to planned to work on a project for 2 months
at the Tokyo University .
Which visa am i supposed to apply for?
I would be grateful if you could furnish me with the details.
Thanks in anticipation.
Rahul, you’d probably have to get a College Student or Professor visa. I would think the university would be able to help you with the visa process.
I am a US citizen and married a Japanese citizen about two years ago here in the US. How do I go about obtaining a spouse visa to Japan for myself? Is it necessary for me to go to Japan on a tourist visa and remarry there? Or is it a matter of simply visiting a Japanese embassy here in the US? Thanks for your time and help.
Jonathan
Hello , I work as a TOEIC part time teacher in Shibuya. My school manager says it might be difficult to get a sponsored visa for me through the school, since my income from there will be considered as too low (app. 200.000 per month). Is that true? What are the requirenments to obtain a visa sponsorship from a Japanese employer? Does the immigration office really refuse in some cases the visa through an employment? How can I be sure to get for a valid 1-year working visa in Japan?
People looking for more information about self sponsored visa’s can check out this page (make sure you read the comments too!) on my website: Self-sponsored Visa requirements in Japan. I successfully got a self sponsored visa last year and when I couldn’t find much information about it, I decided to dicument my experiences so it would be useful for other people out there. I’m off again to the Dept of Immigration in Shinagawa today, actually, It’s THAT time of the year again… wish me luck!
Jonathan, you should be able to organise this through your local Japanese embassy. It may be that your marriage will have to be registered in Japan as well; the embassy should have more details on this.
Robert, That level of income seems about right for a language teacher — I would be surprised if that were a reason for refusing you a visa. You could try calling some of the bigger schools (Nova, etc.) and asking what their procedure is. In general, you can never be absolutely sure that you will get a visa. The best thing to do is to get as much information as you can about the requirements — you’ll need a Japanese speaker (usually your employer) to help.
