My husband is in Japan, he is a student with the monbu scholarship. i need to follow him, i know about the dependent visa and i read the Mofa section about the dependent visa about my ability to work ” Daily living activities on the part of the spouse or unmarried minor child of those who stay in Japan with a status of residence mentioned in Table (a) (excluding Diplomat and Official) or with a Cultural Activities or College Student status of residence” .But my question is since i will be dependent of my husband who has a college visa will my ability to work will be granted more easily. Please help me on that topic.

    Hello Bennett,

You seem to be the best source of information about the subject of Visa’s in Japan. My situation is that I’m applying to study abroad in Japan. I’d get a student visa, that’s pretty easy to understand. But I’m also married and I want to bring my wife with me. Is she able to get a dependent Visa? I would think so, but it’s something I’m trying to figure out. If you could point me in a better direction I’d greatly appreciate it. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Pam, I don’t know what criteria are used to decide whether you will receive permission to work — you’ll need to ask the Immigration Information Centre.

Carl, if you will get a “College Student” visa then your wife is eligible to apply for a dependent visa. She won’t be eligible if you have a “Precollege Student” or “Trainee” visa.

    Hi,

I’m here right now on working holiday, and want to stay longer/come back. My uncle has Permanent Residency Status here, and I was told by a few people I could become his dependant… Anyone know how that works/if that’s true? Is there an age limit? Someone told me 22, and someone told me there was no age limit on a dependant visa… Thanks!

Suman, you could try adking your local Japanese embassy.

D, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says that a dependent visa is for the spouse or minor child of a resident, so in that case you could not become your uncle’s dependent. You should get your uncle to check at the Immigration Information Centre.

What kind of Japan-visa does your mom have? If she has got permanent residency you should be able to apply for a “Child of Permanent Resident”-visa.
