    Hello,

Two years ago my wife and I lived in Japan – she had a work visa and I was her dependant. Due to a family emergency we had to leave and return to Canada rather quickly. Although we intended to return to Japan after a couple of months (while our visa were still good) we ended up staying in Canada for 2 years. Recently we returned to Japan to resume our stay but without visas. My wife went back to her old company and they sponsored her again but process took quite a bit of time. She finally has her visa and I applied for my certificate of eligibility (thinking that it was actually the visa application). In the time it’s taken to process that though my toursist visa has expired. I notified Immigration about this yesterday (Friday) and they said I needed to come to their office first thing Monday. I’m very concerned that they’ll ask me to leave and not quite sure what my options are. Can anyone offer advice here?

    thanks,
    john

[...] Since I’ve decided on applying to JCMU I’ve had a few questions that I needed answered that I thought I’d share with the rest of the class. The first was Lisa’s Visa status. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (MOFA) webiste mentions dependent Visa’s but is vauge as to how it would work with my student Visa. According to thunderguy’s blog, Lisa will have a Dependent Visa which allows her to stay in Japan as my wife. As long as I have a valid Visa she will too. This was truly a big concern for me. I’ve wanted to go to Japan for quite some time but did not want to leave her behind. Knowing about the dependent Visa makes our life so much easier. [...]

Madhuri and Santhi, unfortunately only your spouse and minor children can be eligible for dependent visas. I don’t think there is any category of visa that applies to parents, nieces or other family members.

Hi, My husband has been offered a job here in Japan. We entered Japan with our temporary visa. We are now going to apply for our visa ( working visa for him, and dependent visa for me). Is it possible to send our applications at the same time? Or should I wait for his working visa to be released first before I submit mine? Do you know where can I get the step-by-step instructions for visa application while inside japan? Thanks very much.

Hello! I have a very, very simple question. I am a United States citizen, married to another United States citizen and currently living in the United States. I am considering moving to Japan for a period of three years to work at my firm’s office in Tokyo. My wife, who is currently working part time, will come to Tokyo with me to live. My firm will, of course, help me obtain my work visa. My question is this: Will my wife be able to work in Japan, if I am living in Japan on a work visa? What visa would she need to acquire in order to work in Japan? Would she be able to work in Japan on a “dependent visa”? Thank you for ANY INFORMATION!!! Yours… Grape. PS: Akemasita omedetou gozaimasu, everyone!

I’m sure this is mentioned elsewhere on this site… and possibly even on this page. :) Your wife should be eligible for a dependent visa. This does not give any permission to work, but she can apply for permission to work part-time. (This permission is not automatically granted.)

Of course, your wife may be able to get her own work visa if she finds an appropriate and willing employer.

hello,i have just obtained a monbusho scholarship to study in Kobe. i have currently a fiance.i will first be leaving very soon to japan and coming back to my country shortly after to marry her. My concern is about getting her the dependent visa. Is the procedure complicated? Does it require for exemple a lawyer? Does the Japanese Government require a specific amount of money in a bank account in order to grant her the dependent visa? Could it be refused?and again could she find some work knowing that she has an architecture degree and relevent experience.
Thank you in advancefor everything, and waiting impatiently for any comment and help.
    Sincerly yours, Gil

Teb, as far as I know, dependent visas are usually granted (as long as the partner has a valid visa and there is a marriage certificate or birth certificate as appropriate). Likewise, a spouse visa should not depend on income or anything like that.

Sadi, you should ask at the Immigration Information Center . That’s always your best source of this kind of information.

Luis, as I said above, “You should apply to the immigration department if you need more information on this.”

Tanya, only your spouse and minor children are eligible for dependent visas. Your parents would need to make their own visa arrangements.
