Madhu, your child should be able to get a dependent visa, and your wife a spouse visa (not dependent). I don’t know how long it will take, but maybe 30 days is long enough. Check with the immigration information centre for details (their contact details are on this site somewhere :) ).

My husband works for an American company that would like for him to work in Tokyo for at least 2 years. If we are to move there, I would like to work. What are my options?

Jan, you will be able to get a dependent visa, and once in Japan can apply for permission to work part-time. The kind of job you could get depends on you — English teaching is always a possibility but there are many others depending on your skills (particularly your Japanese language skills :)

chathuranga, your wife should apply for a dependent visa. She should probably contact her local Japanese embassy for details.

Hi, my wife get a scholarship from the JICA. I came to the Japan under the dependent visa status. Where can I get information about the required documents need to apply the premission for work in part time? The working permission depends on the type of the scholarship or not?

Hi all. I have been in Japan for a while now (on a dependant visa with my spouse (who has a intra-company transferee visa). I would like to start working. I understand, from everything I’ve seen on this site & others, that I can probably easily get a work permit that will allow me to work up to 28 hours/week. My question is this: Is this permit required for every circumstance? In my situation, it’s likely that I would be working 100% in the US Embassy, for a US company, and my pay would go directly from the US company to my bank account in the US. Does anyone know if I need to get a work permit in this case?

Is there any downside to getting a work permit, other than going through the bureaucratic paperwork minefield that is typical at all Japan governmental offices? If my situation doesn’t require a permit, perhaps I shouldn’t bother with getting one?

Finally, in my situation, would it matter if I was hired as either a “consultant” or a “direct employee” for the US company?

Thanks in advance for your comments

Soniya and Lara Mae, your dependents should apply at their respective home Japanese embassies for dependent visas.

Demka, as far as I know the permission to work part-time depends on your visa, not your wife’s. Try the Immigration Information Center for more details.

Mary, you should ask the US embassy — there must be many others in similar situations. It’s very important that you play it safe — unless the immigration department says you don’t need a visa, then you probably do. Besides, the advantage of getting one is that you can change jobs more easily later.

Bimon, your girl (I assume it’s your daughter) should apply for a dependent visa. You should contact the Japanese embassy in your country, or you could try your embassy in Japan for more details.
