    Hi,
I’ve been a DBA, UNIX/Linux System Admin. & Software Tester for the past 7 years. My Japanese is basic/intermediate (the Mrs. is Japanese). In your opinion, Which job sectors in Japan should I apply for?

    Thanks.

Ali: You should apply for any job you want! If you want to know which sectors are more likely to have jobs available, all you can do is check job advertisements. See the Recruiters and Resources sections for a few pointers.

“Luck is a word used to describe the success of people you don’t like.”

I am in Japan since 1999. I find many IT Job in ISP’s market at first.
When I started I didn’t speak, read are write any Japanese. (And still I can’t).
Then I move on programming and with few of Japanese IT friend we got contract job with UNIQLO. 6 Months project in Labor Ministry Office in Shinjuku 2002-2003 programming/networking was 14 Million Yen.

You will earn if you learned many technologies. So above salaries in your post is not realistic. Most people earn nearly twice as that salaries. If you work as headhunter then yes you have to make your own money.

So only person who never had contact, I mean real contact with Japanese, or they never had real Japanese friend in IT technology then your given salaries are ok.

Make sure you do not make “HI BY FRIEND” with Japanese IT Professional.
Make a real contact. Make it fast and real.

    Check this out:
    MS Japan:
Advance XML-SOAP Programming for Windows 2003 Server for SMBC Bank Tokyo.
Duration: 3 Months, Contract Payment: 4,200,000 Yen

So leave alone those nut salaries and head-hunting job and try to learn something new or forget what I say and become real IT Slave in Japan.

CJ: Thanks for your excellent comment — quite an inspiring story. Yes, I should say that getting into the IT industry through friends is probably a much better way to go. But if you want IT work, and you have Japanese friends in the IT industry, you should be talking to them — not reading this website. :)

Nweze and everyone else: In case it isn’t already obvious, I am not an employer. I won’t employ you, and it’s unlikely that many employers read this website. So don’t waste your time posting job requests or resumes here. Due to space constraints, I will have to delete such comments.

    Anyway, thanks for reading!
